What is performance drift in sales?

Performance drift is the gap between what a sales rep learned in training and what they do on a live buyer call three weeks later.

Where the drift shows up

A team learns a method at a kickoff or a workshop, passes the certification, and then sells the way it sold before. The skill was understood; it was never used on a real deal under pressure, so it faded. The research agrees. Skills left unused for more than a year decay with an effect size of minus 1.4 (Arthur et al. 1998), and what happens back at work predicts use better than what happened in the room (Saks and Belcourt 2006).

In our study of sales kickoffs, of about 4,800 first-hand accounts, 9 people described using something from the event afterward. Training narrows the gap for an afternoon. Coaching on live deals, every week, is what keeps it closed, which is the job of an AI coach described in the AI sales coaching guide.

Caught in the debrief

A team is trained on putting a cost on the buyer's problem before talking price. Three weeks later a rep's discovery call ends with "send me a proposal" and no number anywhere in the transcript. In the debrief, the rep talks it through with the coach, who points to the minute the buyer said "it's a real drag on the team" and asks what that drag costs. They agree the question for the next call. The drift is caught on the deal where it happened.

Illustrative example from this entry.

A manager can find the same drift in a 1:1 by asking for evidence: "On your last discovery call, what did the problem cost the buyer, in their words?" A rep still using the training quotes a figure. A rep who has drifted says "They didn't want to get into numbers yet," which usually means the question never got asked.

FAQ

What causes performance drift in sales? Skills learned away from real deals fade when they are not used soon and often on live calls. Pressure, habit and a manager with no time to coach push reps back to what they did before. The environment back at work predicts whether a skill is used.

How is it different from the forgetting curve? The forgetting curve is about memory. Performance drift is about behavior: a rep can remember the method and still not use it on the call. Quizzes test memory; coaching on the deal addresses behavior.

How do you fix performance drift? Coach the skill on live deals every week, at the standard the team was trained to. Brief before the buyer call, debrief after it, and check next week whether the agreed move happened.
