What is a sales methodology?

A sales methodology is a team's shared way of diagnosing a buyer's problem, qualifying a deal and moving the buyer to a decision. It sits inside the sales process: the process lists the stages a deal moves through, and the methodology says what the rep does and what the buyer must confirm at each one.

One vocabulary, two layers

A methodology gives reps and managers one vocabulary and one standard of evidence. When a manager says "the pain is not implicated" or "the gap is not quantified," every rep knows what is missing and what question would fix it.

Methodologies come in two layers. Qualification frameworks such as MEDDPICC and MEDDIC list what must be true about a deal. Selling methodologies such as Gap Selling and the ValueSelling Framework® shape the conversation that makes it true. Many teams run one of each. Choosing a methodology is the quick part. Whether it holds depends on the months after launch, and on whether managers coach it on live deals each week. Our AI sales experts are built with the people who wrote two of these methods: Keenan with A Sales Growth Company for Gap Selling, and Val with ValueSelling Associates for the ValueSelling Framework®. The sales methodology guide compares the main options and covers how to make one stick.

The same deal review, before and after

This example is illustrative. Before a methodology, a manager's deal review asks "how's it looking?" and the rep says "good, they loved the demo." After the team adopts MEDDPICC with the ValueSelling Framework®, the same review asks two questions: what the problem costs the buyer in their own numbers, and who signs once they decide. The rep's answers: "They said it's a big problem" and "probably the VP." Neither is evidence. An answer that passes sounds like this: "Their ops director said missed deliveries cost them about $40,000 a month, and anything over $50,000 goes to the CFO." The next call is planned around those two questions, and the deal stage waits until the buyer answers them.

The same deal review
Before a methodology
  • "How's it looking?"
  • "Good, they loved the demo"
After
  • What does the problem cost, in the buyer's numbers?
  • Who signs once they decide?
  • The next call is planned around both
Illustrative; after the team adopts MEDDPICC with the ValueSelling Framework®.

FAQ

What is the difference between a sales methodology and a sales process?

A sales process is the set of stages a deal passes through. A sales methodology is how reps behave and what evidence they collect within those stages. The process says where a deal is; the methodology says whether the buyer's evidence supports it.

What are examples of sales methodologies?

Common examples are Gap Selling, the ValueSelling Framework®, Challenger and SPIN Selling, which shape the sales conversation, and MEDDIC, MEDDPICC and BANT, which qualify the deal. Many teams run one from each group.

Why do sales methodologies fail?

Most fail after launch. Reps learn the method in a training event and have to use it on live calls weeks later, and without weekly coaching on their own deals the old habits return. The choice of method matters less than that reinforcement.
