Sales training reinforcement is the planned follow-up after training that gets reps using what they learned on their live deals, through spaced follow-up and coaching on those deals.
What the research says works
Three findings carry most of the weight. Spaced practice beats one big burst, with an effect of d 0.46 across 63 studies (Donovan & Radosevich 1999). Recalling material beats re-reading it: a week later, people tested on it remembered 56% and re-readers 42% (Roediger & Karpicke 2006). And skills nobody uses fade hard, to d −1.4 after more than a year (Arthur et al. 1998).
Our sales kickoff field study found 38% of 473 organizations advise following up after a kickoff, and of about 4,800 first-hand accounts, 9 people describe using something afterwards. In our view, the most effective reinforcement happens on the rep's own deals, inside the 1:1s and deal reviews a team already holds. Who runs the follow-up matters too. Across 1,246 pharma reps, managers' coaching skill predicted goal attainment, and frequent coaching from less skilled managers was linked to worse results (Dahling et al. 2016).
Six weeks after a negotiation training
After a negotiation training (illustrative), each rep names one deal heading to pricing. In week one they have a deal review on that deal, on a call with their manager or an AI sales expert, and plan the next conversation in the training's terms. In weeks two and four, the manager opens the 1:1 on that deal with one question: "When you used it on the buyer, what did they say back?" A rep who has used it answers with the buyer's words. A rep who hasn't says the deal "isn't there yet", which tells the manager where week three goes. At week six, enablement samples real pricing calls to check the behavior held.

FAQ
How long should sales training reinforcement last? Plan at least six to eight weeks, starting within seven days of the training. Spaced touches over that window beat a single refresher, and the six-week call sample shows whether it held.
What is the best way to reinforce sales training? Have reps apply it to their own live deals, then have a trained manager or coach return to those deals in existing 1:1s and deal reviews. Quizzes help recall. The habit comes from the deal work.
Why does sales training not stick? Most of it never reaches a live deal. Research on training (Saks & Belcourt 2006; Blume et al. 2010) finds that what happens back at work predicts use better than the training itself, and skills that go unused fade.
