Sales velocity is the revenue a sales team brings in per day, calculated from its number of opportunities, average deal size, win rate and sales cycle length.
The formula, and where it moves
The standard formula multiplies opportunities by average deal size and win rate, then divides by the average sales cycle in days. Leaders use the result to compare quarters or segments and to see which input is dragging. Three of the four inputs are measured on deals that already closed, so the number describes last quarter.
The place it changes is the open deal. A deal with no stated cost to the buyer's problem tends to shrink at the discount stage, and a deal whose signer has never heard the case tends to sit in late stages for weeks. Both pull velocity down before any report shows it. Our deal risk guide lists the buyer evidence each stage should carry, and our piece on forecast accuracy shows how the same gaps distort the number leaders commit to.
Worked example: 40 open opportunities
A team has 40 open opportunities, a $30,000 average deal, a 25% win rate and a 90-day cycle. Velocity is 40 × $30,000 × 0.25 ÷ 90, or about $3,333 a day. The manager pulls the twelve deals older than 60 days. On each, the rep gets on a call with an AI sales expert such as Caty, names the missing piece (usually the signer), and books the conversation that fills it. If that work brings the average cycle down to 75 days with nothing else changed, velocity rises to $4,000 a day.
Deal size moves on the same calls. If the buyers on those twelve deals never put a cost on the problem and discounts pull the average to $27,000, velocity at 75 days is $3,600 a day. The cost question protects the $30,000. (Illustrative example.)

FAQ
What is the sales velocity formula?
Sales velocity equals number of opportunities times average deal size times win rate, divided by sales cycle length in days. The answer is revenue per day. Use the same period and the same definition of an opportunity for every input, or the result drifts quarter to quarter.
How do you increase sales velocity?
You increase sales velocity by raising any of the top three inputs or shortening the cycle. On a live pipeline the quickest lever is usually the cycle: find the deals waiting on a buyer step, such as a signer who has not seen the case, and plan the conversation that moves it.
Is sales velocity the same as pipeline velocity?
Many teams use the two terms for the same calculation. Where they differ, pipeline velocity usually tracks how fast deals move from stage to stage, and sales velocity is the revenue per day the formula returns.
