What is conversation intelligence?

Conversation intelligence is software that records, transcribes and analyzes sales calls and meetings so a team can search what was said and find patterns across many conversations.

What the platform does with a call

The platform joins or connects to every call, produces a transcript and summary, and tags moments such as competitor mentions, pricing talk or next steps. Managers search the library, review calls, and see team-wide patterns like talk ratio or which talk tracks appear in won deals. Most platforms now add deal risk flags and forecasting from the same data.

What comes out is a record. Turning it into a better next call still takes someone who reads it against the team's method and tells the rep what to do, and that step is easy to drop when nobody owns it. It is why conversation intelligence sits in its own row of our guide to sales coaching platforms. AI summaries need checking too: in our call-scoring study, a cheap evidence-extraction step produced quotes of which a fifth were not in the call.

A recorded discovery call

This example is illustrative. A rep's discovery call is recorded. The platform's summary notes that the buyer mentioned "a CFO sign-off" and that budget was not discussed, and it flags the deal as single-threaded. All three points are accurate, and the rep still has to decide what to ask on the next call. A manager, or an AI sales expert reading the same transcript, turns the record into a move: ask the buyer what the problem costs each month, then ask who on the CFO's team should see that number.

FAQ

What does conversation intelligence software do? It records, transcribes and analyzes sales calls and meetings. Teams use it to search past conversations, review calls, track topics such as competitors or pricing, and spot patterns across the team. Many platforms also flag deal risk and feed forecasting.

Is conversation intelligence the same as AI sales coaching? No. Conversation intelligence produces the record of what was said. AI sales coaching works with the rep on what to do next, reading the call against the team's method and naming the next move on the deal. Many teams run both, with the rep bringing the recorder's transcript to the coach.

Do I need conversation intelligence to coach reps? Not strictly. A rep can talk a deal through with a manager or an AI coach without a recording. A recorder helps because the coach can work from the buyer's exact words; it does not replace the conversation about the next move.
