Quota attainment is the percentage of a sales quota that a rep, team or company closes in a set period, usually a month, quarter or year.
The formula, and what it hides
The formula is closed revenue divided by quota, times 100: a rep with a $100,000 quarterly quota who closes $75,000 is at 75%. Teams use it to pay commission and to compare reps and teams over several quarters. Its weakness is timing. Attainment records the result of deals that were won or lost weeks or months earlier, so it tells a manager how last quarter's selling went and very little about this quarter's while there is still time to change it.
A rep's number can also hide two different problems: thin pipeline, or a good pipeline worked badly. Managers who want to move attainment read what produces it during the quarter: buyer evidence at each stage of every deal, a dated next step the buyer agreed to, and whether the team's method shows up on sampled calls. Write down what "shows up" means before anyone scores it, and calibrate it: in our call-scoring research, even trained experts with a written scorecard disagreed on 18% of scores. The sales onboarding guide applies the same idea to new reps.
Two reps at 60%
This example is illustrative. Two AEs are both at 60% of quota with three weeks left. The first has four late-stage deals, each with a named economic buyer and a signed-off decision date. The second has six deals with no buyer-stated cost on any of them. Same attainment, different quarters ahead. The count worth watching in-quarter is the share of each rep's open deals with a buyer-stated cost and a dated next step. For the second rep it is none of six.
The manager asks the second rep, "Which of these six has a cost the buyer said out loud?" The answer comes back as "They've all told me it's a priority." Priority is a feeling with no number attached. The rest of the week goes on coached calls with that rep, deal by deal, each one planned around getting the buyer to put a cost on the problem before the next conversation ends.

FAQ
How do you calculate quota attainment? Divide closed revenue in the period by the quota for that period and multiply by 100. A rep with a $200,000 annual quota who closes $180,000 is at 90%. Team attainment can be total closed over total quota, or the share of reps at or above 100%.
What is a good quota attainment rate? A good rate depends on how the quota was set. Plans are often built so the average rep lands near target, so attainment well below or above it can mean a quota problem as much as a selling problem. Compare reps with similar territories and tenure before drawing conclusions.
How can a manager improve quota attainment? Coach the deals that will close this quarter and next, one at a time, on what each is missing. A deal review run as a call with the rep, before the buyer conversation, moves the evidence that attainment later records. See how to run a deal review.
