Microlearning in sales training is teaching in short lessons of a few minutes, each covering one topic, spaced out over days or weeks and usually ending with a check.
Where short lessons fit, and where they stop
Short lessons fit knowledge a rep needs soon, and they stop short of changing what the rep does on a live call. Enablement teams use microlearning for product updates, pricing changes, talk tracks and method refreshers that reps can finish between calls.
The research behind it is sound. Our Game Winning Kickoffs field study traced it: spaced practice beats one massed block (d 0.46 across 63 studies), and people tested on material kept 56% of it a week later against 42% for people who re-read it. Well-built microlearning does both.
What it cannot do alone is change behavior on a call. The same research found that what happens back at work predicts whether training gets used more strongly than the training itself does (Saks & Belcourt 2006; Blume et al. 2010). A rep can finish every module and still sell the old way, the gap we call performance drift. In our view, a micro-lesson works when it is timed to the live deal it applies to and followed by a coached call on that deal. The sales readiness guide covers the wider program.
A pricing change, one lesson at a time
This example is illustrative. A team rolls out a new pricing model. Each rep gets a four-minute lesson and a three-question check. A rep with a pricing conversation later that week takes the lesson the day before, then talks the deal through on a call with Caty, our deal expert, that afternoon: what the buyer has said about cost, and how to introduce the new model to this buyer. The next day the rep uses it with the buyer. On Friday the completion report says 100%. The deal record says something more useful: the buyer asked whether the new model caps usage, and the rep had the answer ready.

FAQ
Does microlearning work for sales training? Yes, for knowledge. Short, spaced lessons with a check fit what the learning research supports. Behavior change needs more: the rep has to use the lesson on a live deal soon after, ideally with a coached call before or after the buyer conversation.
How long should a microlearning lesson be? Most run two to ten minutes and cover one topic. If a lesson needs longer, it usually covers two topics and should be split. The check at the end matters more than the exact length.
How do you measure microlearning in sales? Measure what changes on deals and calls, against a written standard, compared with before. Completion rates show the lesson ran. Our certification post makes the same case for tests. Enablement teams can see more on the for enablers page.
