What is sales readiness?

Sales readiness is a rep's proven ability to run a named buyer conversation, such as discovery or pricing, to the team's written standard on a live deal.

How it works in a sales team

Enablement writes the standard, usually in the playbook, and checks it with practice and certification. That proves the rep can do it when the scenario is known. Readiness is proven when the behavior shows up with a real buyer and is still there weeks later, and the research on training transfer says that part depends on what happens back at work more than on the session itself (Saks and Belcourt 2006; Blume et al. 2010). In practice that means a manager, or a coach standing in for one, looking at the rep's live calls. The full treatment is in the sales readiness guide.

Example

This example is illustrative. A team launches a new pricing model and certifies every rep on presenting it. Riley passes. On his first live pricing call, four minutes in, he says: "So for a team your size, the new package comes to..." He has quoted before asking what the buyer's current process costs, which the play says to find first. He is certified and not yet ready.

Certified, then ready
  1. LaunchRiley passes certification
  2. First live callQuotes before the cost question
  3. After coachingNext two calls open with cost
  4. Three weeks laterHe still asks it
Illustrative example.

After a coaching call on that deal, his next two pricing calls open differently: "Before we get to price, what does the current process cost you each month, in hours or in dollars?" Three weeks later he still asks it. That is readiness: the behavior on live deals, holding over time.

The question a manager asks in the three-week 1:1 is "Play me the first two minutes of your last pricing call." Certification results cannot answer it. Few teams run the three-week check. The build selling skills use case shows how we run it on live deals.

FAQ

What does sales readiness mean? Sales readiness means a rep can run a specific buyer conversation to the team's standard with a real buyer. Practice and certification are checkpoints. Readiness is proven when the behavior shows up on live calls and holds weeks after training.

Is sales readiness the same as sales enablement? Enablement supplies the content, training and tools; readiness is whether each rep can use them on a real call. Coaching on live deals is the work that connects the two.

How do you measure sales readiness? Score the target behavior on the rep's live calls against the written standard, at one, three and six weeks after training; three weeks is the check that matters most, because that is where drift shows. Certification pass rates show the rep can do it in practice; live calls show the rep does it.
