Sales certification is a formal check that a rep meets a written standard on a skill, message or conversation, scored against a rubric before the rep runs it with buyers.
The term also covers personal credentials a seller earns from a training body. This entry is about the internal kind: a team certifying its own reps.
How it works in a sales team
Enablement writes the standard, usually from the playbook, and builds a scenario. Reps practice, take a scored attempt, and pass or retry; a manager signs off. The weak point is the marking. Trained experts scoring the same calls disagree on 18% of scores in our research with PeerLab, so a rubric needs the reason for each level written down. A pass proves the rep can do it when the scenario is known. It counts toward sales readiness when it is signed off again on a live deal, as described in how to certify sales reps. The argument in full is in certification is not the same as closing.

Example
This example is illustrative. A team launches a new discovery standard. Maya passes the scenario on her first attempt. Eight days later she runs first discovery with a real buyer, after prepping the deal with Caty on a call. The reviewer reads the transcript against the same rubric: the buyer's success metric is captured in their own words, the decision process is not yet mapped. She is certified with one named gap for her next call, and three weeks later the reviewer checks the behavior is still there.
The difference shows in the reviewer's notes. A scenario pass reads: "Asked all five discovery questions in order." The live sign-off reads: "Buyer said onboarding takes ten weeks and she wants four. Maya asked what the extra six cost and got 'two lost hires a quarter.' Did not ask who approves the budget." The second note could only come from a real buyer, and it tells the manager what to coach next.

The live-deal sign-off is the step most teams cannot staff for every rep. Caty coaches every call against your playbook and scores every roleplay on your criteria, so the live-deal check has evidence behind it. To see it on your standard, talk to us.
FAQ
What is a sales certification program? A sales certification program checks reps against a written standard for the conversations that matter, such as discovery or pricing. Reps practice, take a scored attempt, and are signed off. A fuller program adds a sign-off on a live deal and a check a few weeks later.
Does sales certification improve win rates? A pass on its own shows the rep can perform in a known scenario. Whether deals improve depends on the behavior reaching live calls and holding there, which is why certification works best followed by coaching on the rep's real deals.
How often should reps be recertified? Recertify when something changes, such as pricing, packaging, a launch or a new competitor, and only on the part that changed. Between changes, checking the behavior on live calls catches drift sooner than a yearly re-sit.
